Courage

Last night I was reading Psalm 31 before I went to sleep. As I got to the end of the chapter I read the last verse:

Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart, All you who hope in the LORD. – Psalm 31:24

I read it over and over. If I am of good courage he will strengthen my heart. Oh the Lord knows my heart needs to strengthen right now. Even though I had a really great day. I still need my heart to be strengthened. I need this day to last for the rest of the month LOL.

This morning I woke up thinking about that very verse. So what does the word Courage really mean? I went straight to the strong concordance and this is what I found (the short version).

Brown-Driver-Briggs’ Definition

  1. to strengthen, prevail, harden, be strong, become strong, be courageous, be firm, grow firm, be resolute, be sore

I kept reading strengthen, strong, grow strong, prevail, firm, encourage and mighty. WHAT, little ol me? Instantly this scripture came to mind

Now David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and his daughters. But David strengthened himself in the LORD his God. – 1 Samuel 30:6

The KJV says encouraged himself in the Lord his God. What makes courage and encourage any different? So again I went straight to the strong concordance.

Brown-Driver-Briggs’ Definition

  1. to strengthen, prevail, harden, be strong, become strong, be courageous, be firm, grow firm, be resolute, be sore

It is the exact same thing. Okay, let me google the definition.

Encourage

Verb

  1. to inspire with courage, spirit, or confidence
  2. to stimulate by assistance, approval, etc.

Courage

Noun

  1. the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear; bravery.
  2. Obsolete.the heart as the source of emotion.

So be of good courage. Strengthen yourself in the Lord it is the quality of your mind and spirit. It starts within and God does the rest.

So David knew that if his mind was right in the midst of chaos the Lord would do the rest. Keep in mind David life was on the line. Saul wanted to kill him.

Whatever season of life you are in strengthen your mind. Remind yourself who you are in God. It’s not just little ol me anymore. It is God in you strengthening your spirit to face difficult times without fear.

You are brave because he makes you brave.

Watch what you think about because it all starts in your mind.

Food for thought this morning!
